There is something incredibly romantic about an engagement session along the Santa Cruz coast. Dramatic cliffs, endless ocean views, soft coastal light, and the sound of the waves create a beautiful backdrop that feels effortless and timeless.
For this engagement session, we explored the cliffs of Santa Cruz, California, taking advantage of the different scenery the coastline offers. One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions in Santa Cruz is how much variety we can create in one location. Within a short walk, we can move between dramatic ocean views, rocky cliffs, open landscapes, and quiet little corners that feel completely different.

The California coast has its own personality. Some evenings bring warm golden light and colorful sunsets, while others give us soft clouds, mist, and the beautiful muted tones Santa Cruz is known for. I love working with whatever the coast gives us and creating photographs that still feel natural, romantic, and true to the couple.
For engagement sessions, I always encourage couples to focus less on posing perfectly and more on being together. Walking along the cliffs, laughing, holding each other, and simply enjoying the experience creates the moments that often become my favorite photographs.
What to Wear for a Coastal Engagement Session

Outfits can make a big difference when photographing along the ocean. Neutral and earthy tones photograph beautifully against the cliffs and blue water, while long dresses and fabrics with movement can look incredible when we have a little coastal breeze.

When to Take Engagement Photos in Santa Cruz

I typically schedule coastal engagement sessions around golden hour, when the sun is lower and the light becomes softer and more flattering. Because Santa Cruz weather can change quickly, I also remind my couples that an overcast evening isn't necessarily a bad thing. Cloudy skies can create beautiful, soft light and give the photographs a romantic California-coast feeling.
